H1B Visa needs a revamp to encourage Indians

H1B Visa needs a revamp to encourage Indians

Sushma Swaraj, the External Affairs Minister of India, is upset over the United States not taking any actions about improving H1B Indian workers’ conditions.

Swaraj and Rex Tillerson, US Secretary of State, had met during his visit to India and had assured that the US wouldn’t cause any trouble for skilled Indian workers and make sure they are safe. But unfortunately, nothing has been done about it.

However, while answering Rajeev Shukla, a Rajya Sabha member from Congress, said that whatever is going on in the US, is Donald Trump’s efforts to make things right and put an end to the lottery-based system. Shukla had expressed concerns over what Indian is going through in the US on January 4, 2018.

Rules are enforced to stop the misuse of the H1B visa by big companies like Tata Consultancy Services and Wipro. She assured him that the Indian government is updated with all the happenings in the US.

While giving her answer, she also said that on January 8, 2018, the US Citizenship and Immigration Services released a statement saying that they won’t do anything that would deport thousands and hundreds of H1B workers working in the US.

Merit-based system

A lot more is happening in the US government than we can understand, so patience is what will eventually answer.

Indian skilled workers form the biggest group of H1B workers in the US, so the government is definitely going to protect it.

A merit-based system, similar to that of Australia or Canada is a ray of hope for those deserving skilled Indians who didn’t get selected through the H1B system because of the lottery system.

Trump only wants to make the system better, such that it doesn’t need to be changed in the coming decades.

There are currently 1.5 million H1B workers waiting for their US green cards, but the government is working towards it, which is a definite indicator of India’s stay in the US.
