71 Percent Workers in Silicon Valley are Immigrants

If H1B workers from Silicon Valley vanish suddenly, it will turn into nothing but a city that was abandoned 1,000 years ago. The San Jose companies are heavily dependent on H1B workers and according to a 2016 census data released by the Seattle Times, 71 percent employees there are immigrants. The newspaper quoted Silicon Valley as the center of the tech universe.

50 percent of skilled employees in Silicon Valley belong to immigrant STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) workers, while only 18 percent are local American workers. New York city has 43 percent immigrant STEM workers. Most of these workers have come to the US through the H1B visa system. Even though the H1B process is very expensive, American companies can afford it because these immigrant workers bring a lot of money into the company. And also, local American workers aren’t as educated for the jobs as immigrant workers are.

Most of these immigrant workers are Indians, followed by the Chinese. The Seattle Times said that not only is the H1B process is complicated but also very expensive, and big cost companies are ready to pay. It was started 27 years ago and has been by far the most successful immigrant program ever. With the visa, the American talent hunger was fulfilled, which continues to grow and is insatiable. Even big companies like Apple, Facebook, and Google employ thousands if not more immigrant employees for their middle and top management positions.

Fortune 500 companies

37 percent of the H1B workers go to the top 20 Fortune 500 companies. Cognizant Tech Solutions has over 20,000 H1B workers, followed by Infosys at 12,500 workers. Other companies on this list include Accenture, Wipro, IBM, Microsoft, Tata Consultancy Services, and Intel. However, Apple pays the highest salary, somewhere around $138k yearly, followed by Google and Microsoft.
